Coach's Corner

Basketball, basketball, basketball!
There is a lot of activity this winter in Downing Gymnasium. With Volleyball moving to the fall, we have a smaller than usual group of student-athletes participating on a team this winter, but they are all extremely dedicated to their sport and have been performing well since early December.

With just 13 boys on the MacDuffie Basketball team, the Mustangs have a challenging schedule that has tried to offer opponents that will be a good match for our mixed group of boys. There is not a JV level squad this winter, since the talent at the Varsity level is much stronger than in past years, but our returning coaches Gil May and Charles White have done an exceptional job of getting everyone off the bench and into the games. Senior Greg Davis has been outstanding during the first half of the season, leading the team in scoring and rebounds. He has been supported by starters Robbie Eckels ’10, Brandon Serafino ‘10, Zubby Ezema ’11, and Vernon Garcia ’11.

Over 20 girls are playing basketball this winter so we were able to create two separate teams. The Varsity is led by our veteran coach, Dr. Mark Mullan, while his daughter, MacDuffie alum Eileen Mullan ‘07, is assisting our new basketball coach Pat O’Neill with the JV team. Skilled players Catherine deHahn ’14 and newcomer Mathena Morrissey ’15 are leading the JV squad in scoring this season. Coming off their strongest season yet, (New England Class D Finalists), the Varsity team has struggled after losing some key players last year. However, they remain positive and have thrived on the standout talent of Sophomore Carina Gonzalez. She has consistently scored over 20 points a game, and with Senior Sinead Murray’s strong outside shooting, the team is working hard to improve from game to game.
