MacDuffie Voices

If Mia, class of 2006, lived nearby, she’d probably be back on campus right now, volunteering her time to coach the Mustangs to victory. “MacDuffie is a big part of my past,” she explains. In fact, the only thing that’s keeping her away is geography – Mia’s currently attending college in Atlanta, Georgia! Anyone who knows Mia is not surprised. During her four years at MacDuffie, Mia was known for her positive spirit and generosity, especially to younger students.
Attending MacDuffie was a family affair since Mia’s sister, Joia, graduated from MacDuffie in 1994; however, Mia quickly made a name for herself.
Excelling in athletics, she was the goalie and captain of the Varsity Lacrosse and Field Hockey teams and also played on the Varsity Basketball team. However, Mia’s interests were never limited to sports. A long-time classical guitarist, Mia amazed her classmates during the Spring Concert of her senior year with a beautiful performance of two pieces, including a Spanish Flamenco composition.
She has continued her love for music at Agnes Scott College in Georgia where she plans on majoring in Biology with a minor in Music. Agnes Scott, a private liberal arts college for women, has been an “unexpected surprise” for Mia. She enjoys the well-rounded education she’s getting there, Agnes Scott’s empowering environment, and the feeling of ‘sisterhood’ that is pervasive on campus. The college has a strong alumni organization, something that will be extremely helpful to Mia after graduation. She would like to enter the public health or animal science field in the future.
What Mia cherishes the most about her time at MacDuffie is simple – the people. “I miss all my friends and the people there,” she says, remembering how much fun it was to play Rundown Games during morning assembly and the warm camaraderie of Mountain Day. “Everyone at MacDuffie talked to everyone else – from seniors to 6th graders. Everyone knew everyone else.” Even though she lives so far away now, Mia comes back to the School several times a year to visit and reconnect with students and faculty. Although no longer a student here, Mia continues to be a positive role model for everyone at MacDuffie.
