MassMutual Private High School Scholars Graduation Recognition Event

The first set of MassMutual Private High School Scholars graduated this year, and The MassMutual Financial Group held a Senior Awards Ceremony to celebrate their achievements. The ceremony took place at Cathedral High School on May 14. In total, 24 graduating seniors from three private high schools were recognized – seven students each from Cathedral and Pioneer Valley Christian School, and 10 MacDuffie students. Congratulations to Bryan Alvarado; Emiko Ardolino; Daryll Fay; Jocelyn Ford-Baker; Carleen Huynh; Mohammed Khan; Wilbert Rivera; Yan Rudchenko; Ta’Nika Slater and Allyson Zelck on their accomplishments!

The scholarship program, established in 2005, awards four-year scholarships to students in financial need who have displayed outstanding academic performance. The scholarship guarantees four years of schooling to each student, as long as they maintain a B average or show outstanding effort. Three schools were hosted by the scholarship, --- Cathedral High School, the Pioneer Valley Christian School and The MacDuffie School. This year marks the last year of intake of students into the program.
“MassMutual is so pleased to celebrate this first group of students who are such exemplary scholars,” said Ronn Johnson, spokesperson from the MassMutual Financial Group. “They are such an accomplished group, with such a resilient spirit! Some have come from very challenging environments, yet have the innate ability to absolutely flourish, and they are now going off to some of the top institutions in our country. They have also been good citizens and role models, and have contributed greatly to the rich diversity and culture at their schools, to the benefit of all students.”

“The MacDuffie School is very proud of its ten graduating MassMutual seniors,” said Kathryn Gibson, Head of School. “They have enriched our school academically, in the arts and through athletics, and collectively have received nearly 100 college acceptances to some of the top universities, including Harvard and New York University.”

“MassMutual Financial Group had tremendous insight to support the college preparatory education of talented, but financially-needy students. MassMutual’s corporate responsibility and generosity has transformed the lives of these young individuals in ways that will be measured well beyond their accomplishments in high school and college,” said Mrs. Gibson.

Highlights of the evening included comments from guest speaker, Dr. Oliver Layne, Registrar and Adjunct Professor of American International College: “The youth of today need guidance and hope. The reality is that society has failed to help build our children into productive, socially-responsible members. It does take a village to raise a child.” Those attending were entertained with music from Dinorah Rosario, violinist and freshman at Pioneer Valley Christian School, and a solo performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” sung by MacDuffie graduating senior, Ta’Nika Slater.
