Diversity Day

Diversity Day 2009 was a day of experiencing new activities, understanding different cultures and sharing knowledge with others. Students were able to choose from a myriad of workshops, including Origami, Tap Dancing, Yoga, Paper Cutting, Brazilian Dance, Tae Kwon Do, and Asian Cooking, among others. Officer Michael Carney, a 30-year veteran of the Springfield Police Department and member of the former statewide Task Force on Hate Crimes, kicked off the day with a talk on tolerance, with a moving account of his experiences as a policeman who is gay. He spoke about the conflicts he faced when he broke the news to his superiors, as well as his struggles, both personal and professional.

“I speak for everyone who can’t speak,” he said, “and everyone in this room should be able to be whatever he/she wants to be.” He urged all attending to visit www.hrc.org to find out more information on the work being done for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equal rights.
