The beautiful project photographed above is the work of Ms. Cefalo’s seventh grade Civics class. Nineteen students contributed to the project, which showcases the vast diversity of religion, ethnicities and cultures represented by the class. “The Seventh Grade Mosaic” illustrates that despite their differences, students share “a common humanity, the cement which binds the diverse pieces of the mosaic.”

On a recent visit to the class, students posed for a picture, and together they read their “Declaration,” described by student Skyler Anderson-Coughlin, as “a public, general statement.”

“We are the seventh grade mosaic. We represent many races and ethnicities. Sixteen of us were born in the U.S., and three were born in Armenia, China and Vietnam. Eighteen of us are U.S. citizens, and one of us is awaiting citizenship. Our families are large and small, traditional and non-traditional. We have different religious affiliations and spiritual beliefs. In our group there are four boys and fifteen girls. Some of us are short; some of us are tall. We have different color eyes and hair. We all have attributes which make us individuals (The class went on to describe their many differences.)

“What we share, what we have in common, is our humanity. Our common humanity is the cement which binds the diverse pieces of our mosaic.” The declaration ends with a list of what the students describe as being human: sharing, caring, communicating, etc.
