Weekend Activities and Cultural Trips

Each year boarding students are taken on overnight trips to major cities in the northeast region of the United States, such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Students have attended “Stomp,” a Broadway show in New York City and dined with “Benjamin Franklin” following a visit to Independence Hall in Philadelphia. There are typically two trips during the academic year – one in the fall and one in the spring.
Various weekend activities are planned for our students, such as shopping trips to area malls, movies, roller skating, bowling, billiards, trips to Six Flags Amusement Park and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The local area offers many cultural options for students to enjoy, such as the Springfield Library and Museums at the Quadrangle and the Smith College Art Museum. Located in the town of Northampton, Smith College is one of the finest woman’s colleges in the United States. In addition to a wonderful art museum, students enjoy visiting Northampton for the many restaurants and shops that represent a myriad of cultures.
Students are also taken to many entertainment venues. These have included the Springfield Symphony Orchestra holiday concert, the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the Blue Man Group in Boston, and the Harlem Globetrotters at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield.
Many of the finest colleges and universities in the United States are located nearby and are a short drive from the MacDuffie campus. Students participate in admission tours at such schools as Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, etc.
